Hippie Fair / Feria Hippie

Well here we are again… I know this is already the second post in only three or four days, but at this point, everything is new, everything is interesting, exciting, scary, weird, unique. In any case I should get started. On Saturday night, I got a facebook message from a girl called Jenna; a girl I don’t know. As it turns out, it’s this girl whose mom is Brazilian and dad is American, but she grew up in Newton, MA. That is, she grew up just by BC, in Boston, but she now goes to University of Miami. So, from having grown up by BC she met a lot of people who went to BC, particularly during her high school years, that I then met when I went to BC, so we have a bunch of friends in common, particularly Chris DiSchino and David Cardenas. Apparently, Chris (who now goes to UM Law) gave her my name for her to contact me, since she was also going to be doing the same exchange program, at the same institution, here in Rio. So on Saturday she invited me to go for some drinks with her and some friends of hers, but since I had just arrived in Rio I was still a little scared to go out and about at night so we simply exchanged phone numbers so we could meet up on Sunday.

My first Chopp with Jenna, first of many to come...

So anyways, yesterday morning I awoke in the most pleasant of ways. I woke up to my host-dad, Antônio, playing the piano. He plays every morning without fault, for about an hour. According to information I keep finding out about the people I live with, today I learned that Antônio is a musician and a dentist. Interesting mix. So I awoke to a beautiful piano melody. You guys don’t understand how well he plays the piano!! It’s like music to my ears! Wait… it is music to my ears! Haha. A while later, a phone call from Jenna interrupted the beautiful music, and asked me if I wanted to go with her and her parents (who are here helping her settle in and such) to a hippie fair. So, of course, me, excited and interested in exploring the city, I accepted the invitation, and we met up at the Praça Generão Ozorio which is in Ipanema, only a 5 minute walk from my place. We finally met in person, I met her parents, who by the way are such nice people!! It was really good fun. The hippie fair was more like a Sunday market that sells EVERYTHING!!!!! Everything from sarongs, to flip flops, to sculptures, to art, to necklaces, bracelets, earrings, leather apparel, soccer jerseys, key chains!! You get the idea… I was overwhelmed and in love with this market, I wanted to buy everything! But instead, I wisely resisted thinking that I will have many other opportunities to come any other Sunday especially since it’s like less than 5 minutes from my house. Walking around I saw so many things that reminded me of people, that I would see things and be like ‘oh I have to buy this for so-and-so’ or ‘oh, so-and-so would love this!’ : )

Chopp Brahma draft beer

After walking around for a while, in the extreme heat, we decided to sit down for a bite to eat at a stand led by “Bahian women”, women from Bahia known for being voluptuous and curvy in body structure. So there were like 7 or 8 Bahian women that had a stand set up with typical Brazilian food, where we sat under the tent to refresh ourselves with one of the typical drinks, Guaraná. We then took another look around, but the heat and humidity was almost unbearable, so we went into a restaurant / bar nearby and I had my first taste of ‘chopp’. Chopp (pronounced sho-pee) is the Brazilian draft beer, which is delicious, but gives you a big buzz!! A while later, Jenna’s parents left, and Jenna and I met up with our other friend in common, David Cardenas. With him, we had another few chopp’s, and before we knew it, 9 o’clock had creeped up on us, so from there we moved on to another bar called‘Da Graça’ which was a little more posh, but very artsy, and the décor was fabulous! There, I had my first authentic Brazilian caipirinha to end my day!

Y con esas he terminado mi día!

I love your blog! Its sounds like you are having such a great time! Brazil sounds SOOO cool!
And listen to this, its slightly coincidental: My neighbor directly above my bedroom must be a retired concert pianist because he starts playing everyday at about the time of comida(perfect time to wake up)and keeps at it all day. And is wonderful! AND the girls I live with are studying to be dentists! sorta like ur host dad divided into 3. It sounds like ur home stay is great and like the people there are a lot of fun! Keep enjoying!
