Carnaval Day 3 / Carnaval Dia 3

Today Carnaval reached it’s peak at the Sambódromo. Remember the Sambódromo from the city tour, the strip with bleachers where the samba schools parade down during Carnaval? Right, well, now that it’s Carnaval, it’s being used. Let me explain how it works. The state of Rio de Janeiro has 12 samba schools that spend all year (from one Carnaval to another) preparing for Carnaval. By preparing I mean that they have to come up with a theme, a theme song, they have to raise money to fund all their costumes and floats, etc, most of which are funded by drug money from the favelas. So every year, during Carnaval, each of these 12 samba schools parade down this strip, and are judged by two sets of juries, as I briefly explained in the last post. In the end, I was able to get a ticket to go to the Sambódromo for Monday night, which was the second of the two nights of parades in the Sambódromo (six schools parade on Sunday, the other six on Monday), together with Maja. So Monday I woke up around 3p.m. and headed over to Jenna’s because her mom was making a huge lasagna for all of us

(us three girls, Jenna’s brother and his friends, our guy friends) before we all headed out to the Sambódromo. Jenna, her mom, her brother and his friends were all going to the same section in the Sambódromo, and Maja and I were going to another section. So we went over and had a large meal to stock up for the long night ahead. We all took cabs to the place, arriving at about 8p.m., an hour before the show was supposed to start; we wanted to get good seats. Not to my surprise, there were already quite a lot of people who had arrived before us, with our same objective. I know I explained some of the process in the last post, but I will explain in more detail so you can all understand a little bit better how the whole thing works. The strip that each samba school has to parade down is about 645 yards long, and about 43 feet wide. Each samba school has 80 minutes to parade their school down these almost 700 yards. However, there are a bunch of rules and restrictions by which the samba schools have to abide by, and there is a bunch of criteria on which they will be judged.

The rules are:

• each school has to parade for a minimum of 65 minutes, and a maximum of 80 minutes, as I already mentioned. After they have finished parading, that is once they’ve reached the end of the strip, they have to evacuate and clear the area in a limited amount of time, so as to have the space clear for the next samba school.

• Each school has to have a minimum of 2500 participants, and a maximum of 4000, distributed among the different sections and parts of the samba school. For example, the actual band playing the instruments must have at least 200 musicians, or else the school will be penalized. The ‘baianas’ must also have a minimum of 100 members in the section.
  
  

• Also, no genitalia can be exposed (does not include breasts or rear ends), if done otherwise the school will be also be penalized.

• Finally, the schools aren’t allowed to have any sort of explicit or implicit propaganda of any sort, on their floats, on their costumes, in the lyrics of their song, nothing. No merchandising is permitted, which actually makes it really pleasant to watch something free of any sort of advertising undertone.

So, complying with these rules, each school has to come up with a performance that will be judged on the following criteria: creativity of floats and costumes, the execution of the instrumental component (the band), the synchrony of school as a whole, how well the artistic and musical components work together in representing the chosen theme, the execution of the entire parade: the dancing, the music, the floats, basically how it all works together, the harmony of the music, the samba dancers, and the flag carrier. There are many components to each samba school, but the main ones are: the flag carrier (a dancer who presents the team’s flag), the main samba dancer, the ‘baianas’ which are supposedly women dressed in large Bahian-type dresses, the floats, and the band. In between, you have many other dancers and costumes too, but these are the main ones. So if you think about it, there are thousands of people, which is why it takes each samba school 80 minutes to complete their parade.

No samba school starts to perform until the one before them has finished. So if you do the math, 80 minutes per school (6 schools), that’s 480 minutes, which is 8 hours, give or take lost time in between, let’s say 9 hours. The show began at 9p.m., Maja and I were there until 6 a.m.!!!! The six schools that performed the day I went were Mocidade, Unidos da Tijuca, Imperatriz, Vila Isabel, Grande Rio, and Beija Flor. Beija Flor was the team that won last year, and the year before, and for the 5 years before that, so we were lucky to see them perform. It was spectacular. I don’t even know how to put it into words. It was breathtaking, impressive, magnificent, colorful, exciting, fun. I just kept thinking to myself, ‘Jess do you realize where you are right now?!’ Haha – but wow. The bleachers in the Sambódromo have a capacity for 88,500. You can just feel the excitement in the air, the vibrant atmosphere, everyone anxiously waiting to see all the creative floats and the elaborate costumes. Those were what impressed me the most. They were all so colorful and original, and just amazing! The floats were unbelievable. They were enormous, with all sorts of contraptions, from waterfalls, to life size dollhouses, to big robotic animals, to rotating polygons, to crystal structures… Anything and everything you can think of. Fantastic! Most people have their favorite school, so as each samba school performs, you have different sections of the Sambódromo cheering them on, waving flags, and singing along to their theme song, and dancing. It’s such a rush of adrenalin. So we watched every one of the six samba schools parade down, until six in the morning, even learned some samba moves which we are making sure to keep practicing. Luckily, we were given programs when we arrived so we could follow along with each of the songs and read up on a little bit of the background of each samba school. When Unidos da Tijuca (the second school to perform) Maja and I went nuts because that was the school that we had seen last week when we went with our teacher from the intensive language course. Remember that I took a picture with the band director (scroll down to Carnaval warm-up post)? Well, that entire school performed at the Sambódromo, Unidos da Tijuca, and the man I took a picture with was indeed leading the band! Maja and I cheered on that team the most because we already knew their song and had seen part of the school perform in practice. Anyway, I hope that through the pictures you can appreciate at least some of the spectacularity of it all. It’s unbelievable.

Hoy Carnaval ha llegado a su tope en el Sambódromo. ¿Os acordáis del Sambódromo del que os hablé en el post de la visita de la ciudad? La pista por la cual desfilan las escuelas de samba durante Carnaval… Bueno, pues ahora que es Carnaval, se ha usado para los desfiles de las escuelas de samba. Dejadme explicaros como funciona. El estado de Rio de Janeiro tiene 12 escuelas de samba que se pasan el año entero (desde el final de un Carnaval, hasta el principio del próximo) preparando su desfile. Cuando digo que se preparan, quiero decir que tienen que pensar en un tema que van a representar, una canción, y luego claro tienen que intentar reunir cuanto más dinero posible para cubrir los gastos de todas las carrozas y los disfraces del Carnaval. Mucho del dinero recaudado viene del tráfico de drogas de las favelas, porque muchas de las escuelas son de zonas más humildes de Rio. Aún así, es espectacular lo que consiguen hacer. Bueno así que cada año, las 12 escuelas de samba desfilan por aquella pista del Sambódromo, y son puntuadas por dos grupos de jueces, como ya he explicado brevemente en mi último post.
Al final, tuve la suerte de poder conseguir entradas para ir al Sambódromo el lunes, el segundo día de desfile (son dos, seis desfilan el domingo, y las otras seis desfilan el lunes), junto con Maja. Así que el lunes me desperté sobre las 3 de la tarde y me fui a casa de Jenna porque su madre nos había preparado una mega-lasagna para todos (nosotras tres, el hermano de Jenna y los amigos de él, y nuestros amigos) antes de ir al Sambódromo, para que fuésemos con los estómagos bien llenos para durarnos la noche entera. Digo la noche entera porque son seis escuelas, y cada una tiene 80 minutos para desfilar desde el inicio de la pista, hasta el final. Es decir, 480 minutos, que equivale a ocho horas, más el tiempo perdido entre medias… vamos, 9 horitas – y empezaba a las 9 de la noche… Salimos del Sambódromo a las 6 de la mañana. Total, que llegamos al Sambódromo sobre las 8 de la tarde, una hora antes de empezar el espectáculo para conseguir buenos asientos.
Sin duda alguna, ya había bastante gente que había venido con las mismas intenciones que nosotras. Jenna y su madre y su hermano y los amigos de él estaban sentados en otra sección diferente a la nuestra. Ya sé que os he explicado un poco como funciona el espectáculo, pero os doy un poco más de detalle para que lo podáis entender mejor. La pista por la que desfilan las escuelas de samba mide más o menos 600 metros de largo y trece de ancho. Existen unas reglas que cada escuela que participa tiene que respetar, y sino serán penalizadas. También tienen ciertos criterios sobre los cuales son juzgados por el jurado. Las reglas son las siguientes:

• tienen que desfilar un mínimo de 65 minutos y un máximo de 80. Una vez que hayan desfilado, tienen que evacuar toda la zona en un tiempo cronometrado para dejar lugar para la próxima escuela.

• Cada escuela debe tener un mínimo de 2500 personas participando, y un máximo de 4000, distribuidas, claro, entre las distintas partes de la escuela. Por ejemplo, la banda que toca esta compuesta por 200 músicos, y si no, les penalizan a la escuela. Las ‘baianas’ también tienen que tener 100 mujeres en aquella sección.
  
  

• Otra de las reglas, es que la exhibición de genitalia esta prohibida (con la excepción de ni pechos ni traseros)

• Por último, las escuelas de samba no pueden tener ningún tipo de propaganda o anuncio ni en sus disfraces, ni en la letra de sus canciones, ni en las carrozas, nada. Lo cual, es súper agradable de ver sin tener nada de NIKE o anuncio de cerveza o tal.

Total, que siguiendo estas normas, cada escuela de samba tiene que diseñar un desfile que será juzgado y evaluado según los siguientes criterios: la creatividad de las carrozas y de los disfraces, el desempeño de la parte musical (la banda), la sincronización de todo el desfile y si funcionaban bien lo artístico con lo musical, se conseguía representar el tema escogido, los bailadores de samba, la portadora de la bandera, y la armonía de la música.

Cada escuela esta compuesta por varias partes, pero las que destacan son: la portadora de la bandera (una bailadora que lleva la bandera de la escuela mientras que baila samba), las ‘baianas’ que son las mujeres que visten los vestidos típicos de Bahia, las carrozas, y la banda. Entre medias hay mogollón de bailarines y otros disfraces también. Así que si lo piensas, hay miles de personas por escuela, por eso cada escuela de samba tarda tanto en finalizar su desfile. Ninguna escuela de samba empieza su desfile hasta que la escuela anterior haya terminado, así que si hacemos la suma, 80 minutos por escuela (son 6 escuelas), son 480 minutos, que son 8 horas, más tiempo perdido entremedias, pues pongámosle 9 horas. El fiestón empezó a las 9 de la noche, Maja y yo estuvimos hasta las 6 de la mañana. Las seis escuelas que desfilaron ese día fueron Mocidade, Unidos da Tijuca, Imperatriz, Vila Isabel, Grande Rio, y Beija Flor. Beija Flor es el equipo que ganó el año pasado, y el anterior, y los cinco anteriores también, así que tuvimos suerte de poder verles. Fue espectacular. No se ni como traducirlo en palabras.

Es impresionante, magnífico, súper colorido, súper bonito, divertido y emocionante. Yo sólo pensaba para mi misma, ‘Jess te das cuenta donde estas en este momento?!’ Pero madre mía… En el Sambódromo, hay capacidad para 88,500 personas. Se siente un ambientazo en el aire que no puedes evitar sonreír, es vibrante, y todo el mundo esperando a que empiece la fiesta, y la exhibición de tanto trabajo en las carrozas y los disfraces súper elaborados. Eso fue lo que más me impresionó, eran todos tan originales y con una cantidad de color que parecía que estaba viendo un arco iris, pero algunos hasta tenían cascadas, casas de muñecas de tamaño real, robotes, unas estructuras giratorias, bueno bueno… ni os imagináis. ¡Fantástico! Todo el mundo tiene su escuela preferida entonces cuando sale cada escuela a desfilar tienen un grupo de gente en la grada que se vuelven locos cantando y bailando y tal. ¡Total que estuvimos hasta las seis de la mañana hasta que acabará cada equipo, practicando algunos pasos de samba para no dormirnos, aunque fuera imposible dormirse con todo lo que había alrededor! Por suerte nos dieron folletos con la secuencia, la historia, y la letra de las canciones de cada escuela de samba. Cuando desfilaron Unidos da Tijuca Maja y yo nos volvimos locas porque, si recordáis, es la escuela que habíamos visto ensayar la semana anterior. Hice una foto con el director de la banda y todo, bueno pues si miráis bien la foto del Sambódromo se verá un hombre vestido de amarillo, ese es el director de la banda, con el que me hice la foto la semana anterior. Como ya conocíamos esa escuela pues les animábamos cantando y tal. En fin, espero que a través de las fotos podáis apreciar un poco lo que era todo eso.
